In this tutorial, I’ll explain how to install SheepShaver on OS X to emulate Mac OS 9 and play Carmen games. You can also use Parallels to emulate Windows XP, but SheepShaver is a little simpler in most respects.

V3.0) is a 1996 video game part of the Carmen Sandiego franchise. It was the third version of the game, after the 1985 title of the same name and a 1992 Deluxe version of said game. The game was released on the heels of the end of the PBS game show in 1996, and features hundreds of QuickTime.
1. Download SheepShaver and this ready-to-go virtual machine I compiled. (If you want, you can follow this guide to do it the long way around, but you probably don’t need to. I am going to assume through the rest of this tutorial that you’re using the ready-to-go VM.) Also, download the games you want and decompress them if necessary. SheepShaver requires images to be in the .iso format (or .toast or .cdr; they’re all the same thing). If you’re using a version of OS X older than 10.8, you can also just insert a CD or mount an image in OS X before you open SheepShaver, and it’ll be mounted in the VM. However, that doesn’t work on 10.8+.
2. Decompress the downloads and put them somewhere convenient. I’d suggest creating a “SheepShaver” folder in your Applications folder and putting the app and the VM package in there.
3. Start the VM by double-clicking it (not the SheepShaver app itself).
4. Once the VM has started up, open the SheepShaver menu in OS X and choose Preferences.
5. Under the list of Volumes, click “Add” and navigate to the .iso image of the game you want to play. Click OK.
6. In OS 9, go to the Special menu and choose Shut Down. Then reopen the VM. The .iso image will be mounted on the desktop.
7. Whenever you want to mount a different .iso (equivalent to changing out a CD-ROM), you need to change the preferences, shut down the VM, and open it again. Or, you can alter the preferences file yourself by right-clicking on the VM icon, choosing Show Package Contents, and opening the Prefs file. The first line should always say “disk Sheep.dsk”, but to mount another iso, you just need to add a line underneath it saying “disk ” and then drag the icon of the .iso next to that line. It will read something like “disk /Users/user/Games/Carmen World.iso” (but of course the file path will probably be different). Save, quit the text editor, go back, and double-click the VM to start it.
8. Make sure to keep your VM running in “Thousands of Colors” mode. For some reason, QuickTime doesn’t run in SheepShaver in 256 colors mode. If you find SheepShaver crashing when a video starts to play, or if you see a big white box where a video should be, open the Monitors control panel and make sure that it’s in Thousands of Colors; some games will change it to 256, and though they usually reset it on exit, sometimes they don’t. If you have a game, like the old versions of World and USA, that requires 256 color mode, you can try it in SheepShaver, but you might be better off using Basilisk II, which - thankfully - works in much the same way.

@DJWafer I followed your guide to a T. I managed to get the first part of the game installed successfully. But now I'm having trouble with Disc 2. Every time I open the installer, it brings me to the menu. But when I try to play the game, I get an error message saying 'Game not Found.' How can I fix it?

@DJWAFER These instructions almost completely worked for me. Once I got to the install setup32.exe part and clicked install, nothing happened. The 32 bit installer just stayed as a background process and no option to install Quicktime was prompted. I even double checked to make sure I was in the first .bin file which I was. Any ideas of what to try next?

Here's how I got this to run on a Windows 10 machine :
1. Download file
2. Download and install Virtual Clone Drive https://www.elby.ch/en/products/vcd.html
3. Extract files and open the 1st .bin file with Virtual Clone Drive. It may open a folder with a series of files or it may prompt you asking what to do with a disc. You may also be able to navigate to a virtual CD-rom via your file explorer. When you open this folder there is a setup.exe file begging to be clicked, don't. Instead, navigate to the folder labeled 'Install', inside you will find the correct set-up file labeled setup32.exe. Run this using windows xp pack 3 compatibility (found in properties folder).
4. You should be looking at the start-up menu, congrats! Almost there. Click install. If it prompts you asking you to enter disc one it's because you've been using the 2nd .bin file instead of the first. Each set corresponds to disc 1 and disc 2, go back to the initial download folder and make sure that you're accessing these files through the first .bin file.
5. After the first part of installation it will prompt you to install Quicktime. Follow instructions and when it asks press 'Skip' so that it doesn't search your system and try to overwrite other instances of Quicktime.
6. You should get a message confirming a successful install.
7. Go back to that same setup32.exe file and run it, the start-up menu should now have an option to run the game.
8. Re-live that sweet childhood nostalgia.
note: This got the game running for me with some minor graphics issues. The game is absolutely playable, and there may be a way to sort this out, but I'm not sure. If someone finds a fix for that please share!
ps: I've never written a guide like this before but there didn't seem to be a readily accessible answer to a problem that seemed to be shared by everyone. I hope this helps at least one person. Take care,

The best way to play this game is on a window xp virtualbox. just make sure its the 32 version not the 64.

Was soo excited for the opportunity to play this again but sadly couldn't get it to work :( Tried mounting the .bin file into PowerIso and also converting the .bin to .iso and mounting that but when I open the setup.exe file and click Install, all I get is an error message saying 'screen info not found!'

This was MY JAM back in elementary school! It's actually how I learned a lot of history because my school wasn't the best at teaching history when I got to high school (went to a private K-12 school). I loved every bit of it and cannot wait to try and beat the VILE agents again!

With the BIN and CUE files you can create an ISO file which can be mounted as a CD (or burned). AnyToISO worked great, just point it at the BIN files and it automatically sees the CUE and makes an ISO. Just mounted the ISOs for a Win98 virtual machine, installed the game and QuickTime 2.1 and it plays flawlessly!

This was a fun game when I was a kid. I honestly didn't remember it till I saw the screenshot of the Egyptian guy and that iconic handcuff, then it hit me like a wave of nostalgia.
